On his fourth album, A Spot on the Hill composer Dan Cook veers away from the multilayered instrumentals of his previous releases and explores a musical intimacy and fragility centered around the piano. While his first three albums could be described as falling between ambient, postrock and classical minimalism, Unguarded leaves the postrock behind, navigating instead a space of graceful, sparingly constructed piano works — with occasional additions of strings, drone and keyboards — where attention is drawn primarily not to the musical adornments surrounding the piano but instead to the resonance and decay of the piano itself.
